The 401 Race project encompasses a hotel, retail, and residential in a former clothing manufacturing warehouse located in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia. The unique site is a challenge for any building type wishing to marry the automobile and the pedestrian because of its location. The existing building is almost completely detached from the rest of the city by the Ben Franklin Bridge to the North and the massive brutalist US Mint building to the South. The network of ramps and high speed roadways surrounding the building further isolate the site from any comfortable connection to the tourist haven that is Independence Mall.
